About American Family Care (AFC)
American Family Care (AFC) was established in 1982 in Birmingham, Alabama by D. Bruce Irwin, MD, who is Chairman of the Board, CEO and Medical Director. The concept was basic but revolutionary because it put the patient, not the healthcare provider, at the center of the delivery model. Since 1984, AFC has grown to 19 medical centers and 21 practices in the state of Alabama. In addition to primary care and occupational medicine, AFC also offers general surgery, nephrology and internal medicine, orthopedics, ENT, physical therapy and GYN services. This "vertical integration" of medical care allows AFC patients access to specialty services without the traditional two week (or longer) wait. AFC is a privately held company and is not affiliated with any hospital, hospital system or HMO.
